Frequently Asked Questions

How long are lessons?
Lessons are your choice of either 30 minutes or a full hour.

What age/style/proficiency do you teach?
I teach any and all ages! You’re never too young nor too old to learn an instrument. I specialize in pop, rock, and metal drumming. I love teaching beginners, but I am happy to teach all proficiency levels, whether you’re an intermediate player looking to take your drumming to the next level or an advanced player looking to talk shop.

What will I learn?
That all depends on your goals. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching. That being said, if you’re a complete beginner, I aim to get you started playing music as quickly as possible. Expect to learn the absolute basics and get started on your first song soon.

How many lessons do I have to commit to?
There is no minimum nor maximum number of lessons you need to schedule. We can plan a month in advance, or take things week by week. Whatever is most comfortable for you.

Do I have to commit to the same day and time each week?
No, but I highly recommend it. It’s much easier to learn when scheduling is consistent. That being said, I am absolutely flexible if your schedule requires.

How long do I have to take lessons before I become a good drummer?
To put it simply: it depends. For some, music is instinctual, while for others it takes time and dedication to master. But, regardless of your ability, I guarantee that you will see progress with time and practice.

Do you provide everything for the lesson?
I provide a volume-controlled kit for use during lessons at my apartment studio. I also provide any written exercises, tablature, or sheet music to use during lessons and take home to practice. Students will be responsible for buying and bringing their own drum sticks and any books we are learning from. Students will also be responsible for their own at-home practice setup. Drum kits are expensive, but your home setup doesn’t have to be. Ask me about affordable options for at-home practice.

Why should I pay for private lessons when I can learn for free off of the internet?
The internet is a wealth of information, and can be incredibly useful for learning any instrument. But, drumming requires learning many fine techniques that you improve over a long period of time. Free online videos do not a take a comprehensive approach to learning, and there is no way to ensure that you are learning material correctly. You risk developing bad habits that could make it harder to learn correct methods, or even worse, lead to injury. You also miss out on the opportunity to work with a professional who can help you reach your personal goals through a series of lessons crafted especially for you. Simply put, learning with an instructor is the safest, most engaging, and most efficient way to learn the drums.
